Design every page as a landing page. Most sites are designed to start at the home page, but the reality today is that most visits will start elsewhere.
Everyone will have an opinion about the website. Make sure you get early buy-in on the goals, design and function from key stakeholders.
Unless you plan on customers visiting your website only once, keep animation subtle and navigation functional. Product-launch microsites with a limited lifetime are a perfect place for those CSS and Flash animations.
